Colleen Yost
What is your profession?
singer songwriter, musician, collaborator. My profession is my passion and it chose me. I’ll always make music. And the music always comes first. The music doesn’t always pay so I freelance other work from pet sitting, swim lessons, landscaping, waiting tables, Tourguide etc. to pay the bills but music is always a priority.
How did you get into the field that you are in today?
I achieved my current field by staying true to myself. Taking chances. Perseverance and keeping other artists in my circle who I can share and create music with. We encourage and help eachother throughout our musical journey. This is a huge part of how I have achieved most of my opportunities. Usually you find a gig and that gig leads to another and then meet other friends who lead to other gigs. It’s really a community. Taking suggestions from people who love your music on where else to play. And it’s amazing all the places the music can take you that you never thought you’d go.
What do youlove most about your profession?
I love the people I have met through music. Most of my closest if not all my friends are artists that create and share their music with the world. It’s exciting to watch how we all grow together in all of our unique genres
Tell us more about what you do?
What I do? I write music to heal my soul and express feelings close to home. Music can make any lesson beautiful and be a reminder of the silver lining in everything. I tend to share times I feel connected, honoring meaningful friendships and my creator. I love expressing truths and lessons I have learned the hard way. Music allows me to celebrate all these complicated experiences. Never take myself to seriously and be free and to honor my creator by creating. It’s hard to describe but there’s nothing else quite as liberating.
Who in your field do you look up... Who do I look up to?
Hmm there’s so many people! One that comes to mind would be Ruby Flambé who is a role model of mine because she’s always working on some music related project or recording, collaboration, or painting, writing, bedazzling, making jewlery and supporting her community with hosting open mics and other events. She is always herself. Silly, quirky and empowering. She seems to give 110% of her time to creativity and she gets all that back tenfold bc art is the gift that keeps on giving. Staying true to yourself is what’s most important. And the best paths are not conventional on this ever winding journey. I also will have to shout out Bandini bc he has been helpful and showed me how to record with the interface and all that. I’m new to the technology game. He also has a dedication to creating and sharing music out of the love of it. He never takes himself too seriously and he’s grounded. When it comes to music he’s more about what he can put into it than what he can get
