Devonish

What is your profession?

I am a Jamaican singer/songwriter

How did you get into the field that you are in today?

I grew up on dancehall and reggae music living in Montego Bay, Jamaica. But I also was a lover girl listening to 90s RnB. I used to journal a lot, play dollhouse and create so many stories. I had a whole imagination and I just loved writing.

What do you love most about your profession?

It’s just invigorating, I love the high that you get from bringing an idea to life and just being creative. As a child of God I think he’s the ultimate creator and we all have our gifts, we just have to step into it.

Tell us more about what you do?

My latest song release, “My Time” is very symbolic because I believe it’s my time to go after my goals and dreams and to stop playing with my potential for real. My music is very much multifaceted I think I could do a lot of different vibes like RnB, pop, alternative, hip-hop, etc; but it feels most natural in dancehall/reggae. I do love singing and people are always complimenting me on that so I definitely love a slow singing session. I think I have a unique sound and I’m only competing with myself so I can’t wait to see where music takes me!

When did you discover that you had a passion for this field?

I discovered I could sing at 10 and just kept going. Also, my mom used to always put me in pageants and talent shows growing up so naturally I wanted to be a star. Then, after college I took the year to perform at festivals, sell mixtapes and just dive into the music scene in Rhode Island.

Who in your field do you look up… I look up to a lot of artists like Missy Elliot, her music is just electric and I always loved how infectious her music was and still is, you just can’t help but dance to it, I would love to get a song with her if I could, that would be a dream come true. I also loved a lot of Jamaican artists like Mr. Vegas, he really had Jamaica buzzing with his music in the early 2000s, I remember having dance battles to “Hot Fuk” . Also, I love Spice, the queen of dancehall, she’s so unapologetic and bold with her music and I love her style and how she reps Jamaica, she’s definitely empowering to the young women. There’s so many artists that I love it just depends on my mood and team Queen B forever!
